Barbara Jury, nurse and former director of Nursing for the California Hospital, discusses her academic and student life during nursing school. She describes the dormitory life. Students had to share bedrooms, eat at the hospital, obey a "house mother," and respect study hours and curfew. Students also had student organizations that put on national conventions. She states that in between long hours of work and study, she and her friends spent their leisure time at the local ice cream parlor where they had to make their way around the crowds from the boxing arena on Washington Blvd. The nursing school also gave students access to tickets for the Hollywood Bowl and Light Opera. Dr. Sharon Sekhon conducted the interview. |
